Donated Cars Will Aid Efforts to Achieve Independent Living

Two new cars donated to the Intermediate Care Team by the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital will assist in the care of patients when they are ready to be discharged into the community.

Costing together £21,000, the two cars represent the biggest single expenditure approved by the Friends in the last list of successful applications for financial assistance made by NHS departments on the Island.  They are already in constant use by the hospital’s Intermediate Care Team, which is made up of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, care managers, care assistants and administration assistants.

“We are very grateful to the Friends for recognising the need for these cars,” said Intermediate Care Sister Aileen Macaulay, explaining that the team provides short term nursing, and medical, therapy and social care support in the community.

“The team operates closely with Primary Care, including GP teams and hospital services, to provide an integrated service that promotes recovery from illness, timely discharge from hospital, and rehabilitation. It also seeks to prevent unnecessary admission to hospital.

“The whole aim is to maximise independent living. This can involve, for example, supplying equipment, organising home adaptations such as rails, and arranging packages of care when needed, to ensure the patient has a safe discharge home.”

Elaine Grier, another Intermediate Care Sister, explained the cars could take patients to their homes prior to discharge to discover what, if any. adaptations are needed. Later the vehicles could carry any necessary equipment.

Both cars cover many miles a week, one used in East Wight and the other  in West Wight.
